چکیده

Background The proportion of late preterm births has markedly increased during the past two decades, accounting for 70% of preterm births [1]. There is evidence that monitoring not only the quantity but also the quality of growth, in terms of body composition changes, may play an important role in gaining further insight into the relationship between birth weight and time in utero on early growth pattern and future health [2]. To our knowledge, data regarding the early dynamic features of growth and body composition changes of late preterm infants are scarce [3-5]. The aim of this study was to compare growth and body composition of late preterm infants to that of very preterm and full term infants. Materials and methods Observational longitudinal study. Forty-nine late preterm infants and 63 adequate for gestational age very preterm infants were included in the study. Forty healthy, fullterm, breast-fed infants were enrolled as a reference group. Anthropometric parameters and body composition by an air displacement plethysmography system were assessed at term, at 1 and 3 months of corrected age in all groups.

Growth and fat-free mass gain in preterm infants after discharge: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the consumption of a nutrient-enriched formula after hospital discharge determines different growth and weight gain composition in preterm infants according to intra- and extrauterine growth pattern. METHODS Two hundred seven preterm infants were randomized at term-corrected age to receive treatment A (term formula) or B (nutrient-enriched formula) up to 6 mon...

Determinants of body composition in preterm infants at the time of hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND Preterm infants have a higher fat mass (FM) percentage and a lower fat-free mass (FFM) than do term infants at the time of hospital discharge. OBJECTIVE We determined perinatal and nutritional factors that affect the body composition of preterm infants at discharge. DESIGN A total of 141 preterm infants born at <35 wk of gestation and admitted to Nantes University Hospital Neonat...

Does Human Milk Modulate Body Composition in Late Preterm Infants at Term-Corrected Age?

(1) Background: Late preterm infants account for the majority of preterm births and are at risk of altered body composition. Because body composition modulates later health outcomes and human milk is recommended as the normal method for infant feeding, we sought to investigate whether human milk feeding in early life can modulate body composition development in late preterm infants; (2) Methods...

Postdischarge nutrition of preterm infants: more questions than answers.

Postnatal growth retardation is inevitable in preterm infants, the more immature the infant the greater the degree of postnatal growth retardation at hospital discharge. After hospital discharge, several studies have shown that growth is poorer in preterm infants fed a standard term formula than those fed a nutrient-enriched infant formula. This is not surprising because term formulas are desig...
